Eazybetz take on the 2010 World Cup!
June 14, 2010

The 2010 FIFA World Cup has begun. Will Italy repeat as Champions and tie Brail for the most cup wins ever? They’re not favored to. But just two days in, and there have already been some surprising scores. The Americans tying the English on fluke goal, and Mexico needing to rally to tie up South Africa, this year’s host country. The other two teams in Group C, England and the USA group, are Algeria and Slovenia. Playing against each other will hurt one of the team’s chances to advance far into the tournament. Slovenia's only World Cup appearance came in 2002, when it lost all three games. The team finished second in its qualifying group for this tournament, ahead of the Czech Republic and Poland, which both qualified for the last two Cups. Both teams are here because of playoff upsets, and the winner of this game will still need more surprises to advance farther.

When they won in 2006 against France, they entered the tournament with low expectations and they also had that huge point fixing scandal, which ultimately, I believe, brought the team much closer together. They were ranked fifth by FIFA, and went 7-0-3, but didn’t look too sharp in some of those games, especially in the 2-2 tie vs. Ireland. The one thing they have going for them this year is that they seem to have drawn a pretty easy group, with New Zealand ranked 78th, Slovakia 34th, and Paraguay 31st.
The Netherlands have been runner ups twice, but are seeking their first championships this year. Last World Cup, they lost in the round of 16 to Portugal 1-0. They are now ranked fourth by FIFA, and have some pretty high expectations to win the Cup. They start by taking on Denmark n June 14. This will be the teams fifth meeting, with the Netherlands taking the most recent match-up 3-0 during Euro 2000.
As host four years ago, Germany lost 2-0 in overtime to eventual champion Italy in the semifinals before rebounding with a 3-1 win over Portugal to claim third place. Germany took the most recent meeting with Australia 4-3 at the 2005 Confederations Cup as Podolski scored the winner. The only World Cup match-up was a 3-0 victory for West Germany in 1974. Germany didn't have many problems getting to South Africa, going 8-0-2 while outscoring opponents 26-5 during qualifying.
With five titles, Brazil are the most successful World Cup team and also the only nation to have played in every World Cupto date. Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962) are the only nations to have won consecutive titles. Brazil and Germany have both made the most appearances in the final, with seven, while Germany have made the most appearances in the top four, with eleven.
